Nice post and I was sorry to miss the eve...Hi Yoav,
Nice post and I was sorry to miss the event this year.
Hopefully I fall into the healthy dose of cynicism camp while fully supporting everything great about the Bird Fair. I think its legitimate concern that Bird Fair is following the 'rules' of the world because the 'World'overall is not (generally speaking) particularly interested in Bird Fair or Nature and its not necessarily a great thing to be aping the behaviour of a society that doesn't give much value to our community.

I think the genuine concern amongst the nature community is this infection of individualism and the fragmentation of the effort- with everyone flying their own flags - often in competition with each other.
Although this works for a society that are processing nature into bling with celebrities endorsing that bling- that celebrity and material culture within birding is an own goal. The birds and wildlife are the stars of this show- they are the celebrities, not the people behind it. Personally I think birding narcissism a little cringy as the narcissists/celebrities in this game are the birds who are actually stunningly beautiful and live exciting lives unlike the agents (us lot) who are here to promote and protect them.
Personally I would like to see the community acting in a more spearheaded unified way and from a very personal point of view trying to protect my own local patch- there is very little in the way of community supporting that and I do feel that this over competition, ego-tripping and commercialisation in birding is a dangerous distraction if it gets out of hand- which considering the statistics for nature conservation- its clear isn't working as well as it should. ??

Peter Alfreyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06561747770128374819noreply@blogger.com
